Phuket Old Town, from roti to midnight noodles.

Most people come to Phuket for the beaches, but the island’s cooking lives in the old town: Thai, Chinese, Malay and Indian influences in a grid of shophouses. The MICHELIN Guide counts 19 Bib Gourmand spots on the island, most of them in this part of town. Here is a full day, from a charcoal roti breakfast to pork noodles after dark.

In short

A Phuket Old Town food day starts with roti and curry at Roti Thaew Nam on Thep Krasattri Road (mornings only), congee and kaya toast at Khao Tom Thanon Di Buk on Phang-Nga Road, crab yellow curry and moo hong (braised pork belly) at One Chun, curry-powder crab at Chuan Chim on Montri Road, and pork in peppery broth at Go Benz on Krabi Road late at night. On Sunday evenings, eat along the Lard Yai walking street on Thalang Road.

Checked

The place

Why the old town.

Phuket’s old town (Talat Yai, on the MICHELIN maps) cooks with Thai, Malay, Indian and Chinese influences all at once: Hokkien noodles, kaya toast and congee next to southern Thai curries and roti. The MICHELIN Guide notes that most of Phuket’s Bib Gourmand spots cluster here.

It is compact and walkable, so a whole day of eating needs no car once you arrive. For Bangkok, see what to eat in Bangkok.

Six stops

The day

A day that works.

  1. Breakfast on charcoalRoti Thaew Nam has run as a communal breakfast spot for about 70 years, one cook turning every roti on a single charcoal pan. Go early; it closes at noon.
  2. A second breakfastWalk to Phang-Nga Road for congee at Khao Tom Thanon Di Buk, plus kaya toast, made the way the owner’s mother made it.
  3. Lunch in an old shophouseOne Chun sits in a 19th-century building with a vintage dining room. Order the crab curry and the moo hong, with rice.
  4. Afternoon crabChuan Chim on Montri Road, one of Phuket’s oldest food shops, does crab stir-fried with curry powder. Rest after; it is hot.
  5. Late noodlesGo Benz on Krabi Road opens at 5 p.m. and runs past midnight. Pork in peppery broth, and the crispy pork before it sells out.

Take home

What to bring back.

  • A Sunday market haul — on Lard Yai night, sealed sweets and snacks are the easiest to pack.
  • A taste for moo hong. You will be looking for it on every menu afterwards.
  • Check customs first before packing meat, fresh fruit or anything homemade.

Timing and getting there

How to do Phuket Old Town well.

  • There is no metro. From the beach areas it is a drive across the island; once in the old town, walk.
  • Plan around the hours. Roti Thaew Nam is morning only and Go Benz is evening only, per their MICHELIN listings. Lunch in between.
  • Save Sunday evening. Lard Yai turns Thalang Road into a food street from late afternoon to about 10 p.m.
  • Bring cash. Several of these shops are cash only.
  • Shade and water. Midday is hot; plan an indoor stop.

Sharing math

How to share a Phuket Old Town day.

  • Roti: two per person, one with curry and one sweet.
  • Crab curry: one for the table, with rice for everyone.
  • Moo hong: one for two. It is rich.
  • Late noodles: one bowl each. By midnight, sharing is off.
  • Walking street: one of everything, split into bites as you walk.

Keep the trip

Breakfast to midnight, in order.

A day that runs from a 7 a.m. roti to midnight noodles is a story with a shape. Snap each stop in PlateDiary and every dish is cut out on your phone into a save; each shop becomes a moment, in order, on the board and the map. Capture works offline, so no roaming data needed.

Stamp each shop in Stamps, your stamp book of places you’ve eaten. Note what each stop came to in baht and PlateDiary keeps it in baht; it never converts.
