Made for · Couples
For couples who eat out: every date, kept.
Most couples remember the first date. Fewer remember the third one, the pizza in the rain, or what you both ordered at the anniversary dinner. A food journal for two keeps all of it, and nobody has to write anything while the food is hot.
Free on iPhone and Android. No account, and it works with no signal.

In short
A couples food journal is a record of the places you eat together and what you each ordered. In PlateDiary you add your partner as a companion once, and their page fills itself in: where it started, your usual together, your spots, and every meal since.
Checked
Where it started
The first table, still there.
Tag your partner on a moment once and they get a page. It opens with Where it started: the first meal you saved together. For Bea and Sam that is a ramen counter on a Tuesday in March, two bowls of tonkotsu and one plate of gyoza that Sam swears he didn’t finish.
Below it, A year ago today brings back whatever you were eating on this date last year. It is the part couples say they open the app for.
Your usual
Your usual together, and your spots.
On a moment page, Last time here says which visit this is — “Your 4th visit” — and what you had the time before.
- Your usual together — the dish you order most when you’re out together. (It is often not the one either of you would guess.)
- Your spots — the places you go back to as a pair.
- Every time together — every meal, newest first, with the saves from each table.
- Often joined by — the friends who turn date night into dinner for four.
Being honest
Two phones, two diaries (for now).
PlateDiary has no account and no sync yet, so each phone keeps its own diary. Most couples settle into one person snapping the table and sending the picture across afterwards. Your partner doesn’t need the app at all: a companion is just a name on your phone. Nothing is shared with them, and no contacts are read.
Keepsakes
A page for the anniversary.
Anniversaries, birthdays and the first warm evening of spring are date nights that already have a reason. Save each one and by your next anniversary you have a whole year of tables to look back on.
With Premium, Share Studio turns a night into a keepsake: the Date night layout, a receipt or a ticket stub printed from that night’s own details, a “Nth time” rosette for the place you keep going back to. Export it as a picture or a looping 6-second video. Without Premium, the free share sheet exports any moment as a clean picture.
Twelve ideas
12 food date ideas to try next.
More in our guide to food date ideas.
- Order for each other. No vetoes, no menu peeking.
- Recreate the first date — same place, same order, if it still exists.
- A dessert crawl: three places, one dessert each, a walk between.
- Same dish, three places. Best ramen, best carbonara, best tacos — you be the judges.
- A cuisine neither of you has tried. Ethiopian, Georgian, Peruvian.
- Breakfast instead of dinner. Different crowd, better light, smaller bill.
- Counter seats at a sushi bar or ramen shop, side by side.
- A night market graze, sharing everything.
- Tourist in your own city: the famous place you’ve both always skipped.
- A rainy-day soup date. Pho, ramen, French onion — whatever the weather calls for.
- The old favourite on a Tuesday, no occasion needed.
- Anniversary at the place from a year ago today.
Prompts
Five lines to write after a date.
Each save and each moment has an optional note. Type one line on the walk home and future-you will thank you.
- What did we order, and who chose?
- The best bite, in four words.
- What did we talk about?
- Would we come back — and for what?
- One thing to remember that isn’t food.
Questions
Questions people ask.
Can two phones share one PlateDiary diary?
Not yet. There is no account and no sync, so each phone keeps its own diary. Many couples let one person snap the table and send the picture afterwards.
Does my partner need the app?
No. You add them as a companion by name. Nothing is shared with them and no contacts are read.
How do I see what we ordered on our first date?
Open your partner’s page: Where it started shows the first meal you saved together. Search finds any dish, place or note as well.
Can I make an anniversary page?
Yes. With Premium, Share Studio has a Date night layout and keepsakes like a receipt or ticket stub made from the night itself. The free share sheet exports any moment as a picture.
What is a good food date idea?
Order for each other, do a three-stop dessert crawl, or go back to the place from your first date and order the same thing. There are twelve more ideas above.
