Penang, one hawker stall at a time.
George Town, Penang’s old capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage city with a reputation as Malaysia’s food capital. Its hawkers specialise — one stall, one dish, for decades — and the best way to eat is to walk between them. Here is a day’s route, what each dish is, and what to carry home.

The place
Why George Town.
George Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, together with Melaka, as one of the historic cities of the Straits of Malacca. Its food mixes Hokkien and Teochew Chinese, Malay, Indian Muslim and Nyonya (Peranakan, Chinese-Malay) cooking, much of it from stalls that have stayed in the same family for generations. The MICHELIN Guide’s affordable George Town list is mostly hawker stalls.
Dishes to know: char koay teow (flat rice noodles wok-fried with prawns, cockles and egg), assam laksa (rice noodles in a sour, tamarind-and-mackerel broth), chendul (shaved ice with green pandan jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar) and Nyonya kuih (colourful steamed rice-flour cakes).

Take home
What to bring back from Penang.
- Tau sar pneah — flaky pastries filled with sweet mung-bean paste. Ghee Hiang has made them since 1856 and marked its 170th year in December 2025.
- Sesame oil — Ghee Hiang’s other famous product.
- Nyonya kuih — for the flight, not the suitcase. They are best within the day.
Timing and getting there
How to do George Town well.
- Start early. Many hawkers cook from early morning and sell out by lunch or mid-afternoon. A March 2026 food trail found Jalan Argyll’s roti canai often gone by lunch.
- Mind Sundays and rest days. Sri Weld Food Court was closed on Sundays in 2026, and each stall has its own day off.
- Walk the heritage core. The old town is flat and compact. Go slow in the midday heat.
- Out of town: Air Itam Laksa, in Air Itam outside George Town, is the trip for laksa fans — it was closed Mondays and Tuesdays in early 2026.
- Carry cash. Hawker stalls usually prefer it.
Sharing math
How to eat Penang with friends.
- Noodles: one plate per two. You’ll eat noodles four or five times today.
- Laksa: one bowl each. It’s sour and refreshing, and nobody wants to share it.
- Chendul: one each. It melts.
- Kuih and samosas: by the piece, a couple each.
- Take turns paying and settle up later with the split bill calculator.

Keep the trip
One-dish stalls, all in one place.
Penang is a city of one-dish stalls, which means a day of eating is a dozen places in your head by dinner. Snap each one in PlateDiary: every plate is cut out on your phone into a save, each stall becomes a moment, and the map shows the whole George Town loop.
Add each stall to Stamps, your stamp book of places you’ve eaten, and next time you’re in Penang, the stall’s page shows your usual. Bring your friends along as companions and their pages keep the trip too.
