Houston’s Chinatown, one strip-mall plaza at a time.

Houston’s Chinatown is not a few walkable blocks. It is miles of Bellaire Boulevard in southwest Houston, lined with strip-mall plazas where Cantonese seafood houses sit next to Sichuan kitchens, noodle shops and the restaurant that put Viet-Cajun crawfish on the map. Here is a driving crawl, what to order, and how a group should split it.

In short

A Houston Chinatown food trip is a drive along Bellaire Boulevard in southwest Houston. Classic stops are Golden Dim Sum for daily dim sum, One Dragon for soup dumplings, San Dong Noodle House for beef noodle soup, Mala Sichuan Bistro for water-boiled fish, Hai Cang for wok-fried lobster and crab fried rice, and Crawfish & Noodles for garlic-butter Viet-Cajun crawfish. Bring a car and a group, and share every plate.

The place

Why Bellaire Boulevard.

Many of Houston’s best Chinese restaurants — Cantonese, Shanghainese, Sichuan and more — line Bellaire Boulevard, and the same stretch is home to Vietnamese bakeries, noodle shops and crawfish houses. Locals also call the area Asiatown.

Its most famous export is Viet-Cajun crawfish: crawfish boiled, then tossed in garlic butter and spice. Chef Trong Nguyen of Crawfish & Noodles helped shape that style and was a 2020 James Beard Award finalist for it.

The route

A day on Bellaire Boulevard.

Street numbers climb as you drive west. Hai Cang and Crawfish & Noodles are furthest out, so finish there.

  1. Late morning: dim sumGolden Dim Sum serves dim sum every day. Order a round of steamed buns and dumplings and go easy — this is the warm-up.
  2. Early lunch: soup dumplingsOne Dragon is a short drive back east. A basket of xiao long bao for the table, plus one plate of hand-pulled noodles.
  3. Or: a noodle bowlSan Dong Noodle House is the simpler stop: beef noodle soup and pan-fried dumplings. It is cash only, per a 2025 guide.
  4. Mid-afternoon breakRest before the heat. Sichuan food needs an appetite, and so does crawfish.
  5. Dinner: pick a fireMala Sichuan Bistro for numbing, chili-red fish and dry-fried chicken — or drive west to Hai Cang for lobster and crab fried rice.
  6. Finish: crawfishEnd at Crawfish & Noodles. In crawfish season, order the namesake by the pound, ask for a bib, and get the blue crab too.

Timing and getting there

How to do Bellaire Boulevard well.

  • Bring a car. These stops are spread over miles of Bellaire Boulevard, in plazas with their own parking lots. Rideshare works if no one wants to drive.
  • Go with a group. Seafood, Sichuan dishes and crawfish are made for the middle of the table.
  • Crawfish is seasonal. Ask what is in; when crawfish is out, the blue crab and wings still carry the meal.
  • Carry cash. San Dong Noodle House is cash only, and small counters move faster with it.
  • Expect waits. The famous spots get busy at weekend dinner. Go early or on a weekday.

Sharing math

How to order for a group.

  • Dim sum: three plates per two people. Then order a second round if the table is still quiet.
  • Soup dumplings: one basket per two. Everyone gets two or three, and nobody burns out.
  • Sichuan dinner: one dish per person, minus one. Four people, three dishes and rice. The heat does the rest.
  • Crawfish: start with one order per two people. Add more once you see how fast the table peels.
  • Settle up once. One person pays, and the split bill calculator sorts it out.

Keep the trip

Miles of Bellaire, one map.

Strip-mall plazas look alike in your camera roll. Snap each table in PlateDiary and every dumpling basket and crawfish tray is cut out on your phone into a save. Each stop becomes a moment, and the map pins them along the boulevard.

Give each restaurant a stamp in Stamps — when one plaza holds three of them, a stamp says which one fed you. Next visit, its page shows your usual. Add your friends as companions so the crawfish night lives on their pages too.
