Calories · Korean food

Korean food calories, from the grill to the stew pot.

A Korean meal out is rarely one dish. There is a grill in the middle of the table, a dozen little banchan plates, rice, a stew, maybe soju — and at an unlimited place, the pork belly keeps coming.

In short

A 150 g portion of grilled pork belly (samgyeopsal) is about 700 calories before rice and sides, a restaurant bibimbap about 640, half a Korean fried chicken about 860, a plate of tteokbokki about 480 and a bowl of kimchi jjigae about 240 without rice. At Korean BBQ, how many plates you eat matters more than which cut.

How a meal is built

Grill, banchan, rice, repeat.

Korean BBQ is built around shared meat cooked at the table, wrapped in lettuce or perilla with ssamjang, garlic and kimchi. Rice and a stew often arrive alongside. Away from the grill, meals are single bowls — bibimbap, naengmyeon, jjigae with rice — or a big shared platter of fried chicken.

Banchan are mostly vegetables and pickles and add little. The meat, the rice and the drinks are where the number lives.

What drives it

Pork belly, plates and glaze.

  • Pork belly is mostly fat. Even after grilling it stays rich: about 700 calories for 150 g cooked.
  • Unlimited plates. At all-you-can-eat places the count of plates, not the cut, decides the meal.
  • Dips. The sesame oil and salt dip and ssamjang add quietly with every wrap.
  • Fried chicken glaze. Sweet-spicy yangnyeom sauce adds sugar on top of a double-fried crust.
  • Rice and noodles. A bowl of rice with the stew, or fried rice made in the leftover pan at the end.
  • Drinks. Soju, beer and fruit soju are easy to forget.

Lighter orders

If you want a lighter meal.

  • Mix in leaner cuts such as pork neck or marinated chicken alongside the belly.
  • Let the fat render and drip off before eating, and wrap in lettuce instead of adding rice.
  • Stews like kimchi jjigae or sundubu are lighter than the grill — about 240 for kimchi jjigae before rice.
  • Bibimbap with less gochujang, or a cold noodle soup.
  • Share the fried chicken; half a chicken for one is a lot.

Off unless you turn them on

Calories in PlateDiary are off unless you turn them on. Switch them on and, when PlateDiary AI reads your photo of the table, each dish gets one rough “~” number. Accept it or change it; a number you correct is remembered for that dish. With Calories off, the app looks exactly as it did before.

A read sends small pictures of the cut-out dishes, with the place's name as a hint — never the table photo, faces or your location. Calorie numbers never go to analytics, and nothing is written to a health app. PlateDiary AI starts with free tries; here is how it works.

Questions

Questions people ask.

How many calories are in unlimited samgyeopsal?

There is no single number. Count your portions of pork belly at about 700 calories per 150 g cooked, then add rice, stew and drinks.

Is bibimbap lighter than Korean BBQ?

Usually. A restaurant bibimbap is about 640 calories, while a BBQ meal with a couple of portions of pork belly and rice easily goes well beyond that.

How many calories are in Korean fried chicken?

About 860 calories for half a chicken, roughly five pieces. Sweet glazed versions run higher than plain fried.
