PlateDiary on Android.
Plenty of food journal apps are iPhone-only. PlateDiary isn’t: the Android app has the same cut-outs, places, companions and widgets. Here is what’s particular to Android, and a few tips for keeping food photos in order on any Android phone.
Free on iPhone and Android. No account, and it works with no signal.
In short
PlateDiary is a free food journal app for Android: one photo of the table and each dish is cut out on the phone with Google’s on-device ML Kit, then grouped by place and night on a Google Maps map. Android has all five widgets on the Home Screen and a safe copy to a Google Drive file you pick.

Cut-outs
Cut-outs on Android.
The cut-out runs on the phone with ML Kit, in about a second, with no connection. Each dish and drink on the table becomes its own save. If one gets missed, the cut-out editor lets you draw around it, tap it, or use a shape. Receipt scan reads paper receipts on the phone the same way, and deletes the photo right after.
Widgets
All five widgets, on the Home Screen.
Android has every PlateDiary widget. Android phones have no Lock Screen widgets, so Quick Snap — the free one that opens the camera — lives on the Home Screen in small or medium. Add any widget from the Widgets page inside the app, where an Add button asks your launcher to place it, or from your launcher’s own widget list.
| Plan | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Snap | Free | Opens the camera |
| Table Window | Premium | Your latest moments or a collection |
| Memory Lane | Premium | Past saves, anniversaries first |
| Craving Shuffle | Premium | A dish to go back for |
| Save Wall | Premium | A pile of your saves |
Backups
A safe copy to a Google Drive file you pick.
Every day PlateDiary makes a backup on the phone. Turn on Copy to Google Drive and the system Save dialog lets you pick one file in Drive; each backup overwrites that file. There is no Google sign-in inside PlateDiary — the Drive app on your phone does the uploading. It is off until you pick a file. If you pick a spot on the phone itself, Settings warns that it won’t survive losing the phone.
To restore, choose Restore from a file; the picker shows Google Drive alongside the phone.
Imports
Imported photos keep their place.
Import up to 10 photos at a time from your gallery. Android hides a photo’s location unless an app asks, so the picker asks “Include location info?” once; say yes and each photo lands under the place it was taken. A photo with no location gets an “Add a place” button on its moment.
The map
Your map, on Google Maps.
On Android the map is Google Maps: one pin per place with a count of visits, filters for food, drinks, others and four stars and up, and Open in Maps on every place page for directions.
Without the app
Keeping food photos in order on Android.
- Turn on location in your camera settings, so every photo knows where it was taken.
- Take one wide shot of the whole table before close-ups. It’s the photo you’ll want in five years.
- Make an album per trip in your gallery app, named with the city and month.
- Search your gallery for “food” — Google Photos and most gallery apps can find food photos by what’s in them.
- Back up somewhere that isn’t the phone. Phones get lost on trips more than at home.
Both phones
What’s different on iPhone.
Two things are iPhone only: Quick Snap on the Lock Screen, and the Table · Plate · Dish lens strip. On iPhone the safe copy goes to iCloud Drive instead of a Drive file. Everything else — moments, Places, Companions, Premium, PlateDiary AI — is the same. See PlateDiary on iPhone.
Questions
Questions people ask.
Is PlateDiary the same on Android and iPhone?
Almost. Every feature is on both. Only the Lock Screen widget and the lens strip are iPhone only, and backups go to Google Drive on Android instead of iCloud Drive.
Where do Android backups go?
A daily backup stays on the phone. Turn on Copy to Google Drive and pick one file, and each backup overwrites it. You can also export a backup file any time.
Do I need to sign in with Google?
No. There is no PlateDiary account and no Google sign-in. The Drive copy uses the Drive app already on your phone.
Are the Android widgets free?
Quick Snap, which opens the camera, is free. Table Window, Memory Lane, Craving Shuffle and Save Wall are part of Premium.
Does it work offline on Android?
Yes. The camera, cut-outs, naming, places and browsing all work with no connection.
