Untappd, but for food.

Untappd’s magic is simple: every drink you’ve ever tried, in one place, with what you thought and where you were. Food lovers want that too — the thrill of “that’s my 200th dish this year”. Here’s what an Untappd for food looks like, and where PlateDiary fits.

Free on iPhone and Android. No account, and it works with no signal.

In short

Untappd is a social app for rating and discovering beer, wine and spirits: you check in drinks, keep a history, follow friends and earn badges. The food equivalent is a diary of every dish you’ve tried — PlateDiary keeps each dish from one photo of the table, with the place, how many times you’ve had it, and a story of your year, privately and without check-ins to a feed.

Checked

Credit first

What Untappd gets right.

On Google Play, Untappd describes itself as the social app for rating and discovering beer, wine and spirits. You check in a drink in seconds with a rating, tasting notes, a photo and where you had it; keep a history of every drink and see your favorite styles and producers; save drinks to lists; follow friends, toast and comment on their check-ins; and earn badges. It also shows drink menus nearby and scans barcodes. You must be of legal drinking age to use it.

Two ideas make it addictive: the personal count (everything you’ve tried) and the tiny ritual (a check-in takes seconds).

Make it a game

Five food “badges” to give yourself.

PlateDiary has no badges — but your saves make these easy to check. Try them as personal challenges this year:

  • Ten bowls — ten different noodle soups: pho, laksa, ramen, khao soi, bún bò Huế…
  • Around the world in a city — twelve cuisines without leaving town.
  • The regular — five visits to one place. The place page counts them for you.
  • Same dish, five places — the best carbonara (or birria, or croissant) in your city, settled with evidence.
  • Table for ten — one night with ten companions on it.

House rules

What counts as one dish?

Untappd has a database, so a drink is a drink. With food you set the rules. These keep counts honest:

  • Same name, same place = same dish. Your third pad kra pao at the corner spot counts as “eaten 3×”.
  • Same name, different place = a new entry — that’s the whole point of comparing.
  • Shared plates count for everyone at the table.
  • Drinks are dishes too, if you want them to be.

Quiet counting

Counts without a public feed.

Untappd is social by design, and that suits a beer community. Food is more personal — and a lot of meals happen with people who’d rather not be posted. PlateDiary keeps the count and the history to yourself: no account, no followers, nothing published. Your You tab shows saves, moments and places, your most-eaten dishes and favorite drinks; Served turns a month or a year into a story.

And if you want Untappd for your drinks and PlateDiary for the plates, the two sit happily side by side. PlateDiary keeps drinks too — every glass on the table is its own save — but it won’t check them into a beer community.

Pick yours

Which one, or both?

We make PlateDiary, so weigh that in. Untappd facts come from its App Store and Google Play pages, checked 19 October 2026.

  • Choose Untappd if… drinks are your thing and you enjoy check-ins, friends’ toasts and badges.
  • Choose PlateDiary if… you want every dish (and drink) you try out, counted quietly, with the place and people attached.

Questions

Questions people ask.

Is there an Untappd for food?

Not a social one with badges that we know of. For the personal half — every dish you’ve tried, where and how often — a food diary like PlateDiary does the job.

Can I see how many dishes I’ve tried?

Yes. PlateDiary’s You tab counts your saves, moments and places, shows your most-eaten dishes, and each place page lists every dish you’ve had there with a count.

Is PlateDiary social like Untappd?

No. There’s no feed, no followers and no account. You can share any moment as a picture when you want to.

Does PlateDiary keep drinks too?

Yes. Every glass on the table becomes its own save, and you can filter the map and craving wheel to drinks.
